Platinum is a great choice for a diamond ring. It’s the most durable of all the precious metals, so it makes a secure setting for your diamonds. And because it’s naturally bright white in colour, it will complement the colour of a diamond perfectly. At Austen & Blake, our wide selection of platinum diamond rings includes classic solitaires, trilogy rings and sparkling side stone rings.
Platinum is a very popular metal for engagement rings, thanks to its unrivalled strength and durability. Platinum does not change, tarnish or fade over time, making it ideal to wear every day. With its natural white finish, it also doesn't need re-plating every few years, unlike white gold.
That depends on your personal preference. While platinum and white gold look very similar, there are some subtle differences between them. Platinum is rarer, denser and more durable than gold, and it might feel a little weighter on your finger. Unlike gold, it can be used in its near-pure form to make jewellery, so it’s also hypoallergenic. It’s also worth bearing in mind that white gold and yellow gold will need to be replated every few years to maintain their bright appearance.
Platinum is known for symbolising durability, purity and high status as, historically, it was the most expensive metal. Because of its strength and durability, some believe it represents a strong and lasting romantic relationship, too, making it the perfect choice for a wedding or engagement ring.
Compared to other metals, such as white gold and yellow gold, platinum is the purest metal as it's made of 95% pure platinum. In contrast, white gold is made of 75% pure gold and 25% other metals, such as silver, to achieve its white colour and yellow gold is alloyed with copper and silver to make it more durable and suitable to wear as jewellery. Platinum is also easier to maintain as it does not tarnish or need re-plating and is the most hypoallergenic metal.
As platinum is a heavier metal and rarer than gold, it's often the more expensive choice. However, on rare occasions where gold prices dramatically increase, there may sometimes be a shift where buying a gold ring is more expensive than platinum. While platinum may be more expensive initially, in the long run, it could work out as the more affordable choice as it won't need as much maintenance as white gold.
