It is unlawful to describe an item over a certain weight as silver, gold, palladium or platinum, as per the 1973 Hallmarking Act, without an independently applied hallmark. It states the following weights must be hallmarked:
Anything below the stated weight can be described as gold, silver, platinum or palladium without being hallmarked.
